Ever so often I am contacted by people who long to buy a Friesian horse, but don’t really want to spend much money doing so. The pedigree does not matter, as long as the horse is sweet, black and cheap for sale – who needs a piece of paper then… goes the argument of all these people. However, it isn’t that simple folks! Yes you are right, a Friesian is a quite expensive horse – but it is not without a reason. The Friesian horse is one of Europe’s oldest pure breeds, a result of many, many years of hard work from breeders dedicated to only use the best quality horses in their breeding programs. It is thus not a coincidence that everywhere the Friesian horse travels, it is greeted with much respect and awe, people around the world are spellbound by its majestic front and exceptional gaits. Breeding the best of quality costs a lot of money… there are no shortcuts to take.
"But hey – there is lots and lots of cheap Friesian horses for sale, I see new adds every day”
Yes, you are right, there is plenty, but guess what? These horses are cheap for a reason... and you will soon find the faults yourself...
As in all businesses, there are good guys and bad guys… and you have to be on your guard and not let the first, sweet, black and – in the words of the sales person “ 100 % PERFECT Friesian” steal your heart away. You might just find yourself in a lot of trouble immediately afterwards, and if the veterinary is soon your closest friend, you know it wasn’t worth it saving the few extra dollars….
Do yourself one great favor, save a little longer, lent money from grandma or get the bank to finance your Friesian dream – cause only with a high quality Friesian is it about to come through…
Remember that the pedigree of the horse has a lot to tell you about the quality of horses that are closest family to our horse, if all the ancestors have been given bad premiums or no premiums at all at the inspections, it is not very likely that the horse in front of you should be a solid masterpiece it self.
I wish you the best of luck finding your dream horse – a high quality Friesian.
